There's a date printed on the back of every smoke alarm in your house, and almost nobody has read it. It isn't the day you put the alarm up. It's the day it was built, and it's the number that decides whether the thing still works.

The 40-Minute Alarm Pass

Three numbers run this whole job, and all three come from the US Fire Administration.
10 years. A smoke alarm gets replaced ten years from the date it was manufactured, not from the day you hung it.
Once a month. That's how often the test button is supposed to get pressed.
Once a year. That's the swap interval for a 9-volt battery, in any alarm that still takes one.
Set aside forty minutes this weekend and take every unit in the house in turn. A ladder, a vacuum with the brush attachment, and a marker is the whole kit.
Press and hold the test button until the siren reaches full volume. A weak chirp or a siren that takes its time is a fail, not a pass. Warn anyone else in the house first, these are loud on purpose.
Twist the alarm off its bracket and turn it over. The manufacture date is printed on the back, usually as a month and a year. If it's more than ten years ago, stop there. That unit is finished and no amount of cleaning changes it.
Vacuum the sensor grille. Run the brush attachment right around the slots on the face. Dust and cobwebs sitting in the sensing chamber are a leading cause of both false alarms at 3am and a real alarm that responds slowly.
Fit a fresh 9-volt if it takes one. If it's a sealed ten-year unit, there's no battery door and nothing to swap. The whole alarm is the consumable.
Write the date you did this on the back of each unit in marker while you've got it in your hand. Next year you won't have to remember.
One more number worth carrying around: the USFA reckons you may have less than two minutes to get everyone out of a house fire. That's the entire argument for the forty minutes.
Where Alarms Go, and Four Places They Shouldn't
Coverage is where most homes come up short, and it usually isn't for lack of trying. People buy two alarms for a house that needs six.
The rule from the US Fire Administration is simpler than it sounds. One inside every bedroom, one outside each separate sleeping area, and one on every level of the home including the basement. A three-bedroom, two-story house with a basement needs six before you've counted anything else.
Carbon monoxide runs on its own map. The Consumer Product Safety Commission asks for a CO alarm on every level and outside sleeping areas, which is why a combination unit does two jobs at once in the hallway outside the bedrooms.
Where they should not go matters just as much, because an alarm that cries wolf gets taken down.
Right beside the stove. Cooking steam and smoke set it off, you get tired of it, and eventually the battery comes out. Keep some distance from the range.
Inside the bathroom, or right outside the door. Shower steam reads a lot like smoke to a photoelectric sensor.
Within a few feet of a vent, a ceiling fan, or an open window. Moving air pushes smoke away from the sensor, which is the one moment you want it drifting in.
In an unconditioned attic or garage. These run far outside the temperature range alarms are built for, and extremes shorten their life.
Interconnected alarms, where one sounding sets them all off, are what both agencies recommend. If yours are older and standalone, that's the upgrade worth planning rather than doing this weekend.
Seal the Attic Hatch Before the Heating Bills Start

While the ladder is already out, look up at the attic hatch.
On most houses it's a sheet of plywood dropped into a hole in the ceiling, with a gap around all four edges and no insulation on top. Warm air rises, finds that gap, and leaves. It's a hole in the ceiling of a house you're about to spend six months heating.
The fix is twenty minutes and under five dollars.
Wipe the lip of the frame clean and let it dry. Adhesive foam will not stick to dust, and this is the step people skip.
Run self-adhesive foam weatherstrip around the frame where the panel comes to rest. MD Building's closed-cell foam seal is $4.99 for 17 feet, which covers a standard hatch with plenty spare.
Push the panel down onto the foam so it compresses. A hatch that now sits a fraction proud is a hatch that's actually sealing.
Closed-cell is the type to look for. Open-cell foam soaks up moisture and packs down flat within a season.
The bigger win is insulating the panel itself, a piece of rigid foam board cut to size and glued on top. That's a different afternoon and a saw, so it's a fair thing to leave for now. The weatherstrip alone closes the draft, which is most of the loss.
The Alarm We'd Actually Put Up
If step two of that pass turned up a unit older than ten years, here's the replacement we'd hang in its place.

The feature that earns its place is the cooking-nuisance sensing, which is built to tell a burnt dinner from a fire. That's the thing that stops an alarm getting pulled off the ceiling, and a pulled-down alarm protects nobody. It also gives an end-of-life warning when the ten years are up, so the date on the back stops being something you have to remember.
We haven't lived with this one through a season ourselves. What's here is First Alert's published spec, plus one check we did run: we searched the CPSC recall database this week, and neither this model nor First Alert has any active recall. That is not a given in this category. Several combination alarms sold on Amazon have been recalled or warned about in the last two years for failing to sound in a fire, and Kidde's TruSense series has been under recall since 2021.
The tradeoff is the sealed battery. Ten years from now you replace the whole unit rather than a $3 battery, and you cannot swap in a fresh cell if it ever misbehaves early. That's the deal a sealed alarm makes, and for most households the missing chirp at 3am is worth it.
Whatever you buy, check it against the CPSC recall list before it goes on the ceiling. It takes thirty seconds and this is the one product category where it counts most.

The Bathroom Fan You've Never Taken Down

The bathroom fan is the one piece of ventilation in the house that runs every day and gets cleaned roughly never.
What builds up there is a mat of lint and dust sitting right across the intake. A choked fan still makes noise, which is why nobody notices, but it moves a fraction of the air it should. That matters most from October onward, when the windows stay shut and the only way shower moisture leaves the room is through that fan.
Moisture that doesn't leave ends up on the ceiling, in the paint, and eventually in the drywall.
Turn the fan off at the wall switch. Not just off, and if the switch is shared with the light, be sure of which one you flipped.
Pull the cover straight down a couple of inches. It's held by two spring wires that squeeze inward. Pinch them and the cover comes free in your hand.
Wash the cover in the sink with warm soapy water, then set it aside to dry all the way.
Vacuum the housing and the fan blades with the brush attachment. Get up into the blades, that's where most of it is.
Dry the cover fully, pinch the wires, and clip it back. A cover that goes back damp just collects the next round of dust faster.
Fifteen minutes, twice a year. You'll hear the difference before you see it.
Steal This: Finding a Stud With No Tools
Every job above eventually needs something screwed into a ceiling or a wall, and the stud finder is always in the other drawer.
Knock along the wall with a knuckle, moving in small steps. Hollow between studs, a flat dull thud on one. That gets you close in about ten seconds.
Then confirm it. Studs in most US homes sit 16 inches apart, center to center, sometimes 24 in newer builds. Find one you're sure of, measure 16 inches along, and knock again. If it's solid there too, you've got the spacing and the rest of the wall is arithmetic.
Two more free tells. Electrical boxes are nailed to the side of a stud, so a switch or outlet puts one within an inch of the edge of that box. And baseboard is nailed into studs, so a line of filled nail holes down low is a map of the whole wall.
Ceilings work the same way, joists just run further apart. Knock, find one, measure, confirm.
