A garage is the only room in the house where nobody ever decided what goes where. Things get set down near the door, and eight years later that is the system.

Why Garages Fill From the Floor Up

Your garage has roughly 400 square feet of floor and closer to 900 square feet of wall. One of those is full and the other is bare, and it isn't an accident.
Putting something on the floor is free and easy. It requires no planning, no hardware, and no concern about whether it can support the weight. Putting something on the wall requires all three, so the floor wins every time, often for years.
TLDR: The floor fills because it's the path of least resistance, not because you're short of space. Most garages have more than twice as much unused wall as they have floor.
That's the whole problem, and it means the fix is mostly about making the wall as easy to use as the floor. Four moves do it.
Clear the perimeter first. Anything touching a wall is blocking the surface you're about to use. Pull it all to the middle and you'll see how much wall you actually have, usually for the first time.
Zone by how often you touch it, not by what it is. Garden and garage stuff gets stored together out of habit, which puts the weekly rake behind the Christmas bins. Sort into weekly, seasonal and archive instead, then place each zone by how easy it needs to be to reach.
Work in bands up the wall. Floor to knee takes heavy and wheeled things that you'd rather not lift. Knee to shoulder is prime real estate and belongs to the weekly zone. Above shoulder height is for seasonal and archive, because you'll get a ladder twice a year and not mind.
Leave the middle empty. The car-shaped hole in the room is the point of the room. Every storage decision runs through the question of whether it lets a car back in.
The single most useful measurement is not the floor. It's the depth from the wall to where a car door opens, which in most garages is somewhere between 18 and 30 inches. Anything shallower than that is free space you already own.
That's also why shelving beats bins. A stack of bins on the floor is 24 inches deep and you can only reach the top one. The same 24 inches turned vertical is four shelves you can all reach at once.

This Weekend: Do One Wall, Not the Whole Garage

The reason garage projects fail is that they get attempted all at once, on a Saturday, in August. Do one wall instead. It takes about three hours and it changes how the room works.
Pick the wall you walk past most, usually the one nearest the door into the house.
Empty it completely. Everything within 3 feet of that wall comes out to the middle of the floor.
Find your studs and mark them. They're at 16 or 24 inch centers in most homes, and everything heavy has to land on one. A magnet works if you have no stud finder, because it'll grab the drywall screws.
Draw a light pencil line at 48 inches. That's roughly shoulder height and it's the boundary between your weekly zone below and your seasonal zone above.
Mount the heavy anchor points first, the hooks or rails taking bikes, ladders and the wheelbarrow. Get these on studs and get them level, because everything else hangs off the visual line they set.
Fill the weekly zone, then the seasonal zone above it. Anything left on the floor at the end goes to another wall or to the curb.
Sweep, and pull the car in before you lose the habit.
Two things worth knowing before you start. Drywall anchors are rated for a fraction of what a stud holds, so treat any anchor-only mount as light duty regardless of the number on the packet. And leave the wall behind the garage door track alone, because you'll need that clearance when the door opens.
Do the second wall next month. A garage done in four passes stays done. A garage done in one Saturday is back to normal by October.
The Handbook: Before You Buy a Garage Storage System
Every system in this category is one of four things, and the marketing works hard to blur that.
Rail and track

A horizontal steel rail on the studs, with hooks that slide along it. Strong, cheap per foot, easy to rearrange. Best for long-handled tools, bikes and folding chairs. It carries almost nothing small.
Slatwall panels
Full-coverage grooved panels, usually PVC, that take the same hooks anywhere on the surface. It looks finished and costs the most. Worth it when you're covering a whole wall and want it to look deliberate.
Pegboard
Cheapest per square foot and the right answer for hand tools, small parts and anything you want to see at a glance. Conventional hardboard sags and crumbles at the holes. Steel pegboard doesn't.
Freestanding and overhead
Shelving units and ceiling racks. These take bulk and bins, which none of the wall systems do well. Overhead racks are the only sensible home for the stuff you'll never touch, and they need real joist mounting.
What matters when you choose:
Weight rating per hook, not per system. A "1,750 lb system" number describes the whole wall. The number you actually hit is the one hook holding the loaded wheelbarrow.
Stud compatibility. Anything requiring a mounting pattern that doesn't land on 16 inch centers is going to fight you.
Accessory cost. The panel is the cheap part. Hooks, baskets and shelves are where the spend lives, so price a realistic set before committing to a system.
What doesn't matter: the color, the claimed square footage of the panel, and any system that requires you to commit the whole garage before you find out whether you like it.
Most homes want two of the four, not one. A rail for the long stuff, and pegboard or slatwall for the hand tools.
The Bill Cutter: The Second Fridge in Your Garage

If there's an old refrigerator running in your garage, it's likely the least efficient appliance you own, and it's working harder than it would anywhere else in the house.
Two things stack up. Older units draw considerably more power than a current model, and standards have moved a long way since the early 2000s. Then the garage itself makes it worse, because a compressor dumping heat into 95 degree air has to run far longer to hold the same internal temperature.
Here's how to decide whether to keep it.
Find the model number and the manufacture date, usually on a sticker inside the door frame or behind the crisper.
Read the overnight number on your utility app, the way we described earlier this week. Unplug the garage fridge for one night and read it again. The gap is what the fridge costs you.
Multiply the daily gap by 365 and your rate per kilowatt hour.
Then ask what it holds. A second fridge that's half empty and stores drinks twice a year is a straightforward removal. One that absorbs real overflow from a full household is doing a job, and the answer there is replacing an old unit rather than running it.
Two smaller moves if you're keeping it. Give it a few inches of clearance at the back and top so it can shed heat, and check that it's actually rated for garage use, because many aren't. A standard fridge in an unheated garage can stop cooling the freezer compartment properly once winter drops the ambient temperature below its design range.
Most utilities in the US run appliance recycling programs that will collect a working old fridge and pay you something for it. Worth ten minutes on your utility's site before you pay anyone to haul it away.
The Pick: The Tool Wall Worth $90

Where it stops: 7 square feet is a tool wall, and that's all. It won't hold bins, a mower, or anything bulky, and it isn't the cheapest way to cover a large area. If all you need is somewhere to hang a few light hand tools, a $20 sheet of conventional pegboard does that job and you can spend the difference on the rail for your long-handled stuff.

Steal This: Park First, Then Store
Before you organize anything, pull the car all the way in, exactly where it would normally sit. Then get out, and mark the floor.
Chalk works. So does a line of painter's tape, or four corner marks if you'd rather not draw an outline in your garage. Include the space you need to open the doors and walk around the front.
Now put the car back outside and look at what you've drawn. Everything inside those lines has to go somewhere else, and everything outside them is the storage you actually have.
This sounds obvious and it changes the whole project, because most people organize the garage first and then discover the car doesn't fit. Working the other way around means every decision has a hard boundary, and you stop negotiating with yourself about whether the mower can live just slightly further forward.
Leave the marks down for a few weeks. They're the only thing stopping the floor filling up again.
