Hard water shows up as a dozen small annoyances that nobody connects to each other. Spotted glasses, a shower that lost its pressure, soap that won't lather, towels that come out stiff.

What Hard Water Is Actually Doing

Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as groundwater moves through limestone and chalk. That's the whole definition, and every symptom you've noticed is one of those two minerals coming back out of the water.
Start with soap, because it's the tell most people have and never decode. Those dissolved minerals bind to soap and form an insoluble scum instead of lather. So you use more soap, get less foam, and end up with a grey film on the tub, the glass and your skin.
TLDR: Hard water is dissolved calcium and magnesium. Heat and evaporation pull them back out as scale, and soap reacts with them to make scum instead of lather.
The second half is heat. Minerals stay dissolved in cold water and come out of solution when it's heated, which is why scale lands hardest on the hottest surfaces in your house. The heating element in your water heater, the element in a kettle, the heater in a dishwasher. Scale is a poor conductor, so an element wearing a mineral coat has to run longer to move the same heat into the water.
Then evaporation does the rest. Water sits on a surface, dries, and leaves the minerals behind. That's your spotted glassware, the film on the shower door, the crust around the showerhead nozzles.
The measurement is grains per gallon. The Water Quality Association bands it as soft below 3.5 gpg (grain per gallon), moderately hard from 3.5 to 7, hard from 7 to 10.5, and very hard above 10.5. If you see a number in parts per million instead, one grain per gallon is about 17 ppm.
Worth being clear about one thing, because the softener industry is not always: hard water is a nuisance, not a health risk. Calcium and magnesium are dietary minerals and the EPA doesn't regulate hardness as a contaminant. What it costs you is soap, appliance life and time, which is enough to be worth fixing without anyone needing to imply otherwise.
Everything below assumes you know your number. The cheapest way to get it is further down, and for a lot of people it's free.
Fix the Showerhead in Twenty Minutes

If your shower has gone from a spray to a set of wandering jets, that's scale in the nozzles, not a pressure problem. The fix costs whatever vinegar costs.
Fill a sandwich bag or a freezer bag about a third full with plain white vinegar.
Raise the bag over the shower head so the whole face is submerged, and secure it around the neck with a rubber band or a hair tie.
Leave it for one to four hours. Overnight is fine for a bad one.
Remove the bag and run the shower hot for a minute to clear what's loosened.
Work over any nozzles still blocked with an old toothbrush, or your thumb. Rubber nozzle tips will release their plugs if you rub them.
Same principle on a kettle. Fill it with a half-and-half mix of white vinegar and water, bring it to a boil, then leave it to stand for an hour before rinsing thoroughly and boiling one full load of clean water to clear the taste.
Two cautions. Don't use vinegar on natural stone, marble or travertine, because the acid etches it permanently. And check before soaking any shower head with a specialty finish like brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze, since some manufacturers advise against acid and will say so in the manual.
Do this twice a year in a hard water area and the shower never gets bad enough to notice.
The Handbook: Water Softeners, Salt-Free, and Whether You Need One

This is the decision the whole category is built around, and the terminology is doing a lot of work to confuse it.
A true water softener uses ion exchange. Water passes through a resin bed that swaps the calcium and magnesium for sodium, then periodically flushes itself with brine from a salt tank. It removes hardness. The number on your test drops.
A salt-free "conditioner" doesn't remove anything. Template-assisted crystallization and similar systems convert dissolved hardness into microscopic crystals that are less inclined to stick to surfaces. Scale is reduced; hardness is unchanged, and your soap still won't lather. That's a fair trade for some households and a bad surprise for others.
Where the line sits. Below about 7 gpg most people descale occasionally and move on. From 7 to 10.5 it becomes a real cost-benefit question. Above 10.5 a softener usually pays for itself in appliance life and soap alone.
Things worth knowing before you commit:
Softened water is slightly saltier, which matters if anyone in the house is on a sodium-restricted diet. A potassium chloride softener avoids it at higher running cost, and most installs leave one cold kitchen tap unsoftened for drinking.
Softeners need a drain and regular salt. It's an appliance with a chore attached. You have to refill the salt and also ensure it doesn’t clog, which older systems can do.
Well water is a different problem. Iron and manganese foul a standard softener resin, so a well needs testing for those first, and often needs a different or additional treatment. Watch out for radon in your water. When it aerosols it can be harmful.
The order that saves money: measure, then descale what's already scaled, then decide. Buying a softener before you have a number is how people end up with a $2,000 solution to a 4 gpg problem.
The Bill Cutter: Flush the Water Heater

Every hard water home is slowly filling its water heater with sediment. It settles on the tank floor, insulates the burner or the element from the water, and makes the whole thing work longer for the same hot shower. In short, it can cost you an extra $100-$300 a year to heat your water. It's also what's behind the popping and rumbling noise an older tank makes.
Once a year is right for most homes. If you have very hard water, above about 10 grains per gallon (gpg), flush it more often.
Turn the heater off. On gas, set the valve to pilot. On electric, kill the breaker, and never run an electric element with the tank drained.
Shut the cold water supply valve at the top of the tank.
Attach a garden hose to the drain valve at the base and run it to a floor drain or outside. The water is hot, so route it somewhere nobody walks.
Open a hot tap somewhere in the house to let air in, then open the drain valve.
Let it run until it goes clear. Once it does, briefly open the cold supply to stir the tank floor and flush again.
Close the drain, refill with the cold supply, and let the open hot tap run until it stops spitting air before you restore power or gas.
One caution that gets left out of most versions of this: on a tank that’s never been flushed and is more than about ten years old, the plastic drain valve may not reseal once you open it, turning a simple flush into an unexpected repair. If your tank is that old and has never been flushed, it may be smarter to leave it alone and have a plumber handle it during your next service visit.
The Smart Buy: The $11 That Tells You Where You Stand
Before any of the bigger decisions, get your number. The one we'd point you to is the Consumer Hardness Test Kit at $10.95, down from $18.25.
It's the soap-solution method: a bottle of standardized soap solution, an empty test bottle, and a case. You add drops to a measured sample and shake until a lather holds, and the drop count gives you your hardness. It's reusable until the solution runs out, which is many tests. We haven't run this kit against a lab result ourselves, so the method description here is the manufacturer's.
Check the free option first, because for a lot of readers it's the whole answer. If you're on municipal water, your utility publishes an annual water quality report, and hardness is usually in it. That costs nothing and takes five minutes, and it's the right first move before you buy any test at all.
Where a kit earns its money is when you're on a well, when your utility's number is a system-wide average you don't trust for your street, or when you want to check whether an existing softener is still doing its job.
Where it stops: a soap kit gives you a good working number, not a laboratory one. If you're sizing and buying a softener, the installer will test anyway, and a certified lab test is what you want on record for a well.

Steal This: Keep a Squeegee in the Shower
Every spot on your glass shower door is a drop of hard water that dried in place. Remove the drop and there is no spot to scrub later.
Hang a squeegee (we like this one bc it hangs on a door with no added hardware) inside the shower, on a suction hook or over the door itself. Last person out runs it down the glass. It takes about twenty seconds and it takes the water away before it can evaporate and leave the minerals behind.
The reason this beats any spray cleaner is timing. Once the minerals dry onto glass they bond to it, and after months of that you're removing a mineral layer rather than cleaning a surface. Wiping wet glass is a two-second job; descaling dry glass is a Sunday.
The same logic applies to the chrome fixtures and the tub surround. A towel over the taps after a shower does more for how a bathroom looks than any product you can buy.
If your glass is already fogged with old buildup, do one full descale first with a vinegar-soaked cloth left on the glass, then start the squeegee habit from clean.
