The Electricity You Buy While You Sleep

Almost everything with a light, a clock, or a remote is drawing power right now. Standby mode, sleep mode, instant-on: to the meter, they're all just on.

Off used to mean off. Then remotes needed a receiver listening, smart features needed a network heartbeat, and every screen grew a clock. Now the house is full of devices that never fully sleep, each sipping a few watts, all of them billing by the hour.

September is a good month to look. Summer's last cooling bill is about to land, and the idle layer is the one slice of it that bought you nothing. Trim it once and the trim repeats every month without another thought.

The best real-world measurement we have comes from the NRDC, which put smart meters on 70,000 homes and found an average of 164 watts running around the clock in devices nobody was using. That worked out to nearly a quarter of those households' electricity, and about $165 a year for the average US home.

TLDR: A watt that never turns off costs about a dollar a year. A typical house runs more than a hundred of them.

The idle-load math, in one line

Where does it hide? The media console is the usual champion: the TV's quick-start, the soundbar, the streaming box, the game console holding itself half-awake. Then the office desktop asleep, the garage door opener, the old fridge out back, and every wall charger left warm.

A sorting rule worth keeping: a bare phone charger with nothing attached costs pennies. The money is in the big boxes that stay warm to save you a ten-second boot.

The free fixes come first. Flip the media corner's power strip to actually off when you're done, unplug the things you use once a month, and when you leave town for a week, the breaker panel is your friend.

Your utility already meters this every hour. You just have to go look.

  1. Open your utility's app or website and find the hourly usage graph.

  2. Read the flat overnight stretch, usually around 2am. That floor is your always-on wattage: a reading of 0.2 kWh in a single overnight hour means roughly 200 watts running around the clock.

  3. Put a price on it: about a dollar per always-on watt, per year, using the study's own averages.

This works for renters too. Any apartment with a utility login has the graph, and there's nothing to install, no equipment needed, and no landlord to ask.

Two notes so the number doesn't scare you. Your floor will never be zero, because the kitchen fridge lives there, cycling away all night, and that's fine. And if your utility only shows a monthly total, use the vacation test instead: compare a normal week's usage against a week the house sat empty.

One reading tip: the overnight line usually shows a gentle sawtooth, and that's the kitchen fridge cycling on and off. Read the valleys between the teeth. The flat line under the sawtooth is the idle load you can actually go hunting for.

Under 50 watts and you're already running a tight ship. Over 200, the next three sections are usually where it hides.

The Fridge in the Garage Is on the Payroll

The spare fridge is the one appliance that works a full shift whether anyone shows up or not. ENERGY STAR puts a second refrigerator at roughly $80 a year to run, and closer to $110 once it's more than a decade old.

Garage placement makes the math worse in summer. A fridge in a hot garage fights the room all day, so the same box costs more out there than it ever did in the kitchen. A chest freezer is the exception worth knowing: it holds cold better than an upright and usually earns its keep when it's full and actually used.

Three ways to hold it:

  • Keep it if it's earning. A family that actually uses the second fridge is buying convenience, and that's a fair trade.

  • Make it a party fridge. Run it the week you need it, then switch it off, empty, with the door propped open.

  • Retire it. If it's holding six seltzers, consolidate, and when you next replace the kitchen fridge, most retailers will haul the old one away for recycling.

The apartment version of this is the bedroom mini-fridge. Same logic at a smaller scale: if it's holding two drinks and a face mask, it's a nightlight with a compressor, and the outlet is right there.

An empty running fridge is the most expensive shelf in the house.

The Instant-On Tax

Game consoles and a lot of TVs ship in a convenience mode that keeps them half-awake so they boot in seconds. Half-awake still meters, every hour, all year.

  1. In your console's power settings, switch instant-on or rest mode to the energy-saver option.

  2. In the TV's menu, turn off quick-start.

  3. Boot each one once and time the wait. If it doesn't bother you, the setting change pays you monthly.

If the slow boot drives you up a wall, turn quick-start back on for that one device and take the win on the others. This is a dial, and every notch counts.

Leave the router and modem alone. They stay on because they're doing a job, and everything from the security camera to the thermostat rides on them. The desktop is the better target: a real shutdown at night instead of a week of sleep mode costs you a thirty-second boot and nothing else.
