Every house has one room where the internet gives up. Usually a back bedroom, sometimes the kitchen, and the standard response is to pay for faster internet that will do nothing about it. It’s wasted money.
Below: where your WiFI signal is actually going, the breaker that keeps tripping and when to worry about it, the water heater setting costing you money, and the cheapest way to kill a dead zone.

Why Your Wi-Fi Dies in One Room

Your router is probably in the wrong place, and it is probably in the wrong place because that is where the cable entered the house.
Wi-Fi is radio, and radio gets absorbed and reflected on the way to your phone. Drywall and wood barely register, a few decibels each. Brick, tile and concrete are worse. Anything with metal in it behaves close to a wall: a mirror is a sheet of metal behind glass, foil-faced insulation is a foil sheet, and the metal lath behind old plaster is a mesh.
TLDR: Wi-Fi decibels measure signal strength, and every wall, floor, and bit of distance costs decibels along the way. The more decibels you lose, the weaker and less reliable the connection becomes.
Water absorbs it too, which is why a large aquarium can impact your WiFi (costing 15 decibels) on its own and leave a dead zone directly behind it.
Each interior wall can weaken the signal by 3 to 15 decibels, while each floor can cut another 10 to 15. Put two walls and a floor in the way, and you can lose your entire signal margin.
The two bands do different jobs, and this is where get confused:
2.4 GHz travels further and gets through walls better, but it is slower and it shares the airwaves with a lot of other household gear. Aka your smart lock or smart device uses 2.4 GHz.
5 GHz is far faster and far worse penetrating walls. A phone in the back bedroom clinging to 5 GHz is often slower than the same phone would be on 2.4.
Antennas do not aim forward. A standard router antenna radiates outward in a doughnut around itself, and it is weakest off the tip.
Put another way, a vertical antenna spreads Wi-Fi mostly across the floor it is on, with weaker coverage above and below. In a two-story house, angling one of two antennas to about 45 degrees can improve coverage between floors compared with pointing both straight up.
Make this adjustment, then test the signal again. It takes about ten minutes and may solve the problem without buying anything.
A free Wi-Fi analyzer app measures signal strength in dBm. Around -50 dBm is excellent, -67 dBm is about the minimum for a reliable video call, and by -80 dBm the connection is usually barely usable.

Four things worth knowing this week.
🚨 First, the big one: the CPSC has used its Section 12 imminent hazard authority for the first time in nearly 40 years, telling anyone with a Lakkzoom immersion water heater to stop using it now. These are the metal-tube stick heaters you drop into a bucket or tub, with circular or heart-shaped holes and black, yellow, or pink end caps. The agency has 235 reports of fires. About 98,000 sold on Amazon and eBay between September 2022 and July 2026, so check the utility room and the camping bin.
🏊 Second, if you have a pool: two brands of replacement drain cover, Sviyatp and OeyUoc, were recalled on July 23 for failing the entrapment standard in the Virginia Graeme Baker Act. Both sold on Amazon this spring for around $18. A non-compliant drain cover is a drowning hazard, not a paperwork problem.
🧺 Third, about 16,800 EnHomee 9-drawer fabric dressers sold on Walmart.com between September 2023 and March 2026 were recalled for failing federal stability rules. No injuries reported yet. If you have one in a kid's room, anchor it to the wall today or stop using it.
Worth knowing: newer houses often have AFCI breakers on bedroom circuits, and they can sometimes trip when you run a vacuum or treadmill. If a breaker keeps tripping only with one of those devices, the motor may be the reason, though it is still worth mentioning to an electrician.
The Breaker That Keeps Tripping

A breaker that trips is doing its job. The useful question is which of three things it is telling you, because only one of them is a call-somebody situation.
Overloads are by far the most common. Too much on one circuit, and it trips after a few minutes rather than instantly. The classic is a kitchen circuit that dies when the microwave and the kettle run together. The fix is to move something to another circuit, not to make the breaker bigger.
A short circuit trips hard and immediately, sometimes with a bang or a scorch smell. If that happens get an electrician immediately.
A ground fault is what GFCI outlets watch for, in bathrooms, kitchens, garages and outdoors. They trip on a tiny current imbalance, often just moisture. Reset at the button on the outlet itself, which is usually not the same place as the panel.
Newer houses also have AFCI breakers on bedroom circuits, which watch for arcing. They can nuisance-trip on some vacuum and treadmill motors, so a breaker that only goes when you vacuum is worth mentioning to an electrician rather than panicking about.
To narrow it down:
Unplug everything on the dead circuit before you reset anything.
Push the breaker fully to OFF first, then back to ON. Half-throwing (when it’s sort of stuck in the middle) it is why people conclude a breaker is dead when it is not. Look closely at your breaker and you’ll see what we mean.
Add loads back one at a time and note which one drops it.
Two hard lines. Never replace a 15-amp breaker with a 20-amp one to stop nuisance tripping: the breaker is sized to protect the wire behind the wall, and a bigger one lets that wire overheat before anything cuts out. And if a breaker trips immediately with nothing plugged in, or the panel is warm, discolored, or smells like burning, call an electrician the same day.
While you are at the breaker box, make sure each circuit is clearly labeled. Ten minutes now could save a lot of confusion the next time someone is standing there in the dark.
The Bill Cutter: Your Water Heater Is Set 20 Degrees Too High

Most tanks are running at 140 F degrees because that is where the factory or the last service call left them. The Department of Energy recommends 120 F, and dropping to it cuts water heating costs by 6 to 10 percent, or roughly $36 to $61 a year in standby losses alone.
It’s also safe to run your water cooler. At 140 F degrees, tap water can give a child a third-degree burn in about five seconds. At 150 F it takes about two.
Checking takes three minutes. Run the hot tap furthest from the tank for three full minutes, fill a mug, and read it with a kitchen thermometer.
Changing the temp doesn’t take much longer. On a gas heater, the dial is on the front of the gas valve near the floor, and you turn it down to the 120 F mark. On an electric heater there are two thermostats behind screwed access panels, so kill the breaker first, pull both panels, and set both dials to the same number. Setting only the top one is a common mistake and gives you lukewarm water that never quite recovers.
OSHA and some public health guidance favor 140 F, because Legionella bacteria can survive in lukewarm tanks. If someone in the house is elderly or immunocompromised, the better combination is 140 F in the tank with anti-scald mixing valves fitted at the fixtures. For a typical household, 120 F is the right call, and it is free.
The Smart Buy: Try the $12 Fix Before the $140 One
Before buying any networking gear, buy a flat Ethernet cable for about $8-$12 and move the router. Sometimes all you need to fix a dead zone is a longer cable to move around a router.
Flat Cat6 runs under a rug or tucks along a baseboard without looking like a building site. Take the router out of the basement corner where the line came in, put it somewhere central, high, and out in the open, and re-walk the house with the analyser app. A lot of people stop here.
If the dead room survives that, the answer is mesh, and the one we would point you to is the TP-Link Deco X55, around $140 for the two-pack. It is an AX3000 system, and TP-Link rates the pair for up to 4,500 square feet. The reason to go mesh rather than a range extender is the handoff: the units share one network name and pass your phone between them as you walk, instead of leaving you stuck on "Home_EXT" in the kitchen with two bars.
Keep in mind though, a mesh node is only as good as its link back to the main unit. Put the second unit roughly halfway between the router and the dead room, not in the dead room. Putting it where the problem is means it has the same bad signal your phone had. If you can run an Ethernet cable between the two units, do that, and the system performs meaningfully better.
If you live in a small apartment, or have your router sitting in a corner or a cabinet, then don’t bother springing for a mesh first. Move the router, measure the signal again, and you may save yourself the spend entirely.

Steal This: Turn the Big Light Off

The single change that makes a room feel finished costs nothing if you already own two lamps. Stop lighting the room from the ceiling.
One overhead fixture lights a room evenly and flatly from above, which is roughly how an office is lit, and it is why a nicely furnished living room can still feel like a waiting area at nine at night. What a room wants instead is three or four smaller sources at different heights, most of them below eye level. A table lamp, a floor lamp in a corner, something low on a shelf.
The reason it works is shadow. Flat overhead light erases shadow, and shadow is what gives a room depth. Light it from the sides and corners and the same furniture suddenly reads as arranged rather than parked.
The other half of this is bulb color, and it is the part people miss. Look for the Kelvin number on the box. 2700K is warm and is what you want in living rooms and bedrooms. 4000K and above is daylight-white, correct in a garage or a laundry, wrong anywhere you sit down. Mixing color temperatures in one room is the most common mistake, and it is why one lamp can make a whole room look slightly off without anyone being able to say why.
Try it in one room tonight. The difference is obvious within a minute, and the entire cost is a couple of bulbs.
